About Peter

Peter Ecklund is a Rochester-based bassoonist and teacher. Peter is currently completing his masters at the Eastman School of Music, where he studies with George Sakakeeny. He holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Michigan, where he studied with Dr. Jeffrey Lyman. Peter grew up in East Lansing, Michigan and learned to love performing while playing with the Spartan Youth Wind Symphony on the weekends. He then went on to spend the summers of his formative years making music at the internationally renowned Interlochen Arts Camp. At Interlochen, Peter’s love for orchestral performance and chamber music blossomed.

Peter attended the University of Michigan on a full-ride Stamps Leadership Scholarship, generously provided by the Stamps Foundation. At Michigan, Peter performed with the Symphony Band and the University Symphony Orchestra. A highlight of his performance career at Michigan was recording William Bolcom’s Trombone concerto with distinguished guest artist Joseph Alessi of the New York Philharmonic. Peter also performed with various chamber groups and orchestras around South-East Michigan, including the Jackson Symphony. He now performs regularly with the Eastman Philharmonia and Eastman Wind Ensemble.

In past summers, Peter has attended the Eastern Music Festival, the Texas Music Festival, and participated in virtual classes from the Round Top Festival Institute.

While living in Michigan, Peter worked as a mentor for the Detroit Symphony Civic Youth Ensembles for two seasons. There he gave lessons, led sectionals, and coached advanced Middle and High School students in orchestral repertoire. Peter also teaches privately on Zoom.

When not playing the bassoon, Peter enjoys relaxing outdoors in Northern Michigan.

Peter is inspired in teaching and performing by his teachers George Sakakeeny and Dr. Jeffrey Lyman.
